Dr. John J. Kennedy, PhD
Professor, Department of Political Science
West Chester University

Pennsylvania draws new congressional districts every 10 years based on US Census Data. Learn about the redistricting process, gerrymandering, and how communities of interest can be grouped together in a district.

About John J. Kennedy, PhD:

Political analyst and author Dr. John J. Kennedy, who also served as an expert witness during the congressional redistricting case and gerrymandering trial, is a widely sought expert commentator on presidential elections and statewide elections in Pennsylvania. He also served on Governor Wolf’s Redistricting Advisory Council. He has been a frequent contributor to various news organizations regionally and nationally, including ABC, CBS, NBC, PBS, NPR, the Business Insider, Al-Jazeera America, and other media outlets. An expert on presidential election voting behavior and public opinion, Kennedy directed numerous voter polls during previous presidential elections through a collaboration between WHYY and the University’s Center for Social and Economic Research.

Kennedy is the author of Pennsylvania Government and Politics, as well as Pennsylvania Elections, which explores voting trends across the state, analyzes the political geography of the state, and develops a narrative of the people and places that have shaped these elections. In addition, Kennedy has written The Contemporary Pennsylvania Legislature (1999), a book investigating the degree to which current social and technological changes have affected the Pennsylvania legislature and how it has been transformed from a part-time lawmaking body to a full-time professional institution. Both books were published by The University Press of America. Kennedy was also the keynote speaker at Pennsylvania’s Capitol Centennial Celebration in Harrisburg.

First-time voters fill his popular courses on American Political Parties, Campaigns and Elections, American Government, US Congress, State and Local Government, and Pennsylvania Politics. He provides a realistic and dynamic platform for understanding today’s politics.

Kennedy is a Professor of Political Science at West Chester University. He received a PhD from Temple University, and BS and MPA degrees from Kutztown University.
