Virtual Café Sci: Engineering as a new frontier in medical training and research
Mon., June 7
7–9 pm

The inclusion of engineering ideas and approaches makes medicine a quantitative and systems-based discipline that facilitates diagnostics and therapeutics and improves healthcare delivery for all. In this talk, Dr. Rana Zakerzadeh will introduce sophisticated and interesting engineering tools for cardiovascular disease in order to investigate the mechanism behind pathological states and to improve the design of medical devices and enhance their performance on a patient-specific basis. Rana will cover the role of computers in medical decision making and scientific challenges that lie ahead, to help anyone listening to have more conversations about the application of engineering principles within medicine and healthcare.

About Dr. Rana Zakerzadeh:

Dr. Rana Zakerzadeh is an Assistant Professor of Biomedical Engineering in the Rangos School of Health Sciences at Duquesne University, where she has been a faculty member since 2019. Dr. Zakerzadeh received a PhD in Mechanical Engineering at University of Pittsburgh and completed a three-year Postdoctoral Fellowship research in the field of cardiovascular mechanics at the University of Texas at Austin. Dr. Zakerzadeh has spent most of her academic career analyzing and modeling blood flow in human arteries and blood flow through the heart and heart valves. She has collaborated actively with researchers in several other disciplines, particularly applied mathematics on modeling of multi-physics problems with applications in life sciences to help with medical decision making.

About our Virtual Café Sci:

The event is FREE to attend, but preregistration is required! Carnegie Science Center would like to continue to offer programs like Café Sci, Women in STEM, and others. Please consider making a donation when you register. Once you sign up, you’ll get an email confirmation with instructions on how to enter the event. Have a question for Rana? You’ll be able to type your questions in the Q&A section during the presentation!
