Café Sci: Using Structural Biology to Understand Neurotransmitter Transport

Michael will present an overview of his work using cryo-electron microscopy (cryoEM) and protein engineering to understand how the structure of neurotransmitter transporters gives rise to their function. Neurotransmitter transporters are proteins in the cell membranes of neurons that move neurotransmitters to specific locations. Unlocking the structure of these molecules may give rise to novel medical treatments for a range of diseases.

About Michael Dalton

Michael Dalton is a third-year graduate student in the Molecular Biophysics and Structural Biology program at the University of Pittsburgh studying the structural biology of synaptic vesicle transporters. Michael earned his MS in Medical Physiology at Loyola University and his BS in Food, Nutrition, and Dietetics at Illinois State University.
