Café Sci: Helping the brain understand what the eyes see: An introduction to Cortical Visual Impairment.

We think about vision as a sense of the eyes, but the eyes are just the start of a complex visual system that includes many parts of the brain. Children with cortical visual impairment (CVI) have difficulty interpreting what their eyes see, which impacts how they experience the world. Jonathan will discuss the visual system, the unique challenges faced by children with CVI, and the creative solutions educators and parents are using to provide these children access to vision.

About Jonathan Graves

Jonathan is a Teacher of the Visually Impaired, and a Practitioner at the Pediatric VIEW Program at The Children’s Home and Lemieux Family Center. He has worked in general and special education classrooms across the United States, and specializes in providing visual access for children with cortical visual impairment. In 2017, he established a vision intervention program for children with CVI in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, providing assessment and training to families, teachers, and therapists in the region. He currently supports students with CVI and their educational teams across the country.
