Discover the origins of American art with art historian Isaac King through the work of four exceptional artists: Benjamin West, Gilbert Stuart, John Trumbull, and Rembrandt Peale.

With the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776, America was officially established and historical record-keeping became critical. Part of the new nation’s history would be documented and expressed visually. From West’s large scale history paintings and Stuart’s iconic portrait of George Washington, to depictions of the American Revolutionary War by Trumbull and Peale’s notable portraits of American presidents, learn how these four artists contributed significantly to the development of institutions - and an American visual style.

About the speaker: Isaac King, PhD, is an art historian specializing in American Art. King’s research is currently focused on the changing standards of authenticity in the emerging tradition of American national portraiture.
